What to Consider When Adding a Separate Shower

by | Feb 9, 2022 | Bathroom

Whether you are building a new house or remodeling an existing one, there are many factors to consider when adding a shower. For some homeowners, the decision on whether or not to add a separate shower is not their top priority. They are more focused on things like how much time it will take to complete the installation if they have enough space in their bathroom for their needs, and what kind of design they want.

Why Should I Consider Adding a Separate Shower?

There are many benefits to adding a separate shower to your home. One of the most common reasons is that it’s more cost-efficient because you won’t have to pay for hot water all the time. It will also save you money on your energy bill in the long run because the temperature is kept at a steady level rather than fluctuating with use. Another great benefit is that you’ll be able to enjoy all the products in your home without worrying about whether or not they will get ruined or damaged by water. Separate showers are great for people who don’t want to share with others. They can also be a nice change of pace for those who are busy, or whose families are diverse in age, gender, or other ways that might make shared bathing uncomfortable. The downside of separate showers is that they take up more space than shared ones.

Factors to Consider

As you’re planning the addition, consider how you will use the new shower. Will it be primarily for bathing, or will it be used for cleaning up after gardening, painting, or even washing your dog? Is there enough space for the tub area to have enough room to comfortably sit down? Are there adequate storage areas near the shower so you can store soap, shampoo, and other toiletries? Can the plumbing accommodate adding a separate shower without extensive remodeling? Of all the decisions to make when you’re considering construction, adding a separate shower is one of the most important.

Plumbing Supply Lines

If you’re upgrading your shower or adding a new one, you need to consider the type of plumbing supply lines that will be necessary. If the plumbing supply lines are too short, it may be necessary to have a plumber come out and extend them. A few considerations to make before you add a separate shower include the type of pipes and whether or not they need to be replaced. You will need to know how high the ceiling is and what type of wall it is (drywall, concrete, paneling). You will also want to know if there are any obstructions in the way.

Shower Size

You’ll want to make sure that your shower is large enough for two people. A bit of elbow room in the shower is necessary for safety and convenience.  You may want to consider the size of your shower as it will determine whether you need a separate shower. A stand-alone shower typically has a 3-foot by 5-foot dimension, while a walk-in shower can be as small as 2 feet by 3 feet or as large as 4 feet by 8 feet.

Additions and renovations

Another thing to consider is if you will be adding on to your house or making any renovations. If you are adding on, this is a good time to figure out what type of shower enclosure you want and how it will fit into the new space. If you are renovating, then it is important that you don’t install an old fashioned bathtub with a shower

Sink Location, etc.

When adding a separate shower, you need to think about the location of your sink. Is it near to where the shower will be? If not, can it be moved? How close do you need to be to wash your hair and shave your legs? What size is needed for various tasks like shaving and washing dishes?  Adding a separate shower to your bathroom might make the layout more practical. Adding a stand-alone bath is another option that you may want to consider. You can also consult with an architect or builder about the best way to integrate your new shower into your bathroom’s existing design.

Number of Doors

If you have a standard shower, with one door and little space to step into the shower, then you’ll need a larger space for an additional (and separately-tiled) shower. You’ll need to estimate the amount of space needed for each shower, as well as the water heater and pipes that will be used. Another thing to consider is whether or not this separate shower will have a door or not. If it doesn’t, there needs to be a window in the bathroom so that light can come in. The number of doors in the bathroom will also determine the space available for a shower. A separate shower stall with only one door will feel more spacious than if it had two doors.

Tips for Adding a Separate Shower

When you are considering adding a separate shower, be sure to consider the space that is available for it. If you are installing one in a bathroom with an existing tub, make sure the shower will fit in the space. It is also important to keep in mind the style of shower head you want and how this will affect the design of your bathroom.
